Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen more firm. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is usually sought by patients with loose tissues after pregnancy or individuals with sagging after major weight loss.

The amount of time it takes to recover from an abdominoplasty is highly variable and depends upon the individual and the amount of muscle tightening that is down during the surgery.  While four weeks to recover and get back to work after an abdominoplasty is certainly longer than most it is not unreasonable.  The most important factor in recovering from a tummy tuck is not to do any heavy lifting or core work for 6 weeks in order to give the muscle repair time to fully heal.

  • Depends on the problem to be treated, surgical technique(s), and other factors. Can take one to four weeks and patients are advised to take at least a portion of this recovery time off from work.
  • Heavy activity especially is best avoided during this time.
  • Initially there may be bruising and discomfort.
  • A supportive abdominal binder or compression garment can minimize swelling / bruising, and support the repaired tissues.
  • Patients are advised to avoid all forms of nicotine for a month or longer prior to surgery and also during the recovery period.
  • Full recovery takes 3 – 6 months, with further fading of scars thereafter.

Cost – See Pricing Page

It’s difficult to pinpoint the price of tummy tuck surgery, clinically known as abdominoplasty, because it varies wildly from patient to patient, depending on the individual, his or her body type, and the specific procedure being performed. For example, the price of a mini tummy tuck differs drastically from that of a circumferential tummy tuck, based on the extent of the treatment plan. Most qualified plastic surgeons are hesitant to quote prices on the Internet without first consulting with individual patients, identifying their specific needs, and determining a treatment plan. That being said, tummy tuck cost is typically in the range of $3,000 to $10,000.
